Master of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice:

This degree program begins with a core education in key concepts and issues in the criminal justice and criminology field. Students take a number of courses in criminology theory and method. They analyze policy and social defense. They also take a number of classes that use a sociological viewpoint to look at the criminal justice system. Students also study law. They read and research issues such as public health, juvenile delinquency, and the court system. Students then work on independent projects with experienced faculty advisors who oversee the projects until the moment of completion. Students are encouraged to engage in internships that may happen at the state or federal level of government. Students are also encouraged to look outside the government at private firms and companies that may hire criminal justice students. Students who complete this degree are prepared for a number of high paying careers in the government and private sector. Many also go on to pursue PhD degrees in criminal justice and criminology.

PhD in Criminal Justice and Criminology:

This program is for students who have already completed master degrees in criminal justice and criminology and want to further their understanding of the concepts, perform scholarship in the field, and go on to teach criminology and criminal justice at the college level. Students begin with a further exploration of many of the theories and concepts explored in the master degree program. Students also continue work on their independent studies, which concentrate on individual issues in the criminal justice field. Students continue to work closely with faculty members who guide and direct students toward completion of their PhD dissertations. Students are also encouraged to do fieldwork. This work not only enhances their own independent study by providing valuable firsthand experience, but it also allows criminal justice students to work within the criminal justice field. This provides a number of opportunities for future career options. Students who complete this program often teach at the undergraduate and graduate level. Others go on to occupy high level positions in a number of different government agencies.
