History of the Business School
Business schools were not a particularly glamorous academic choice when they were first developed, for the most part in the late 19th and early 20th century. Most were attempts to provide some formal education in accounting and commerce practices, for students who wished to find management careers in the industrial economy of the time. The first graduate program was introduced in 1900, but it would be another fifteen years before another one came along.
The MBA is, for the most part, a post World War II phenomenon that really took flight in the 1960s and 1970s. But for the course of a century, there have been innovations in business education that continue today with programs such as "financial engineering" that have evolved quickly through the marriage of commerce and IT.
