Masters in Software Engineering Program Rankings

Our list of Master in Software Engineering programs is derived from those schools that have chosen to make technology one of their priority education areas. The question of whether to engage in a graduate program for software engineering online or on campus should be dictated by your work and family situation. This degree lends itself well to the technology used today for distance learning. The interactive components of good online course presentations can turn your computer screen into a virtual classroom.

That's a valuable feature for a math-oriented graduate program like software engineering; students can work together or work with professors on the more complex details associated with programming languages and software application structure. Our school selection features two distance learning programs and three schools that are till just offering on-campus programs. They have been culled from a list of the computer science programs in the world.

1. Carnegie Mellon University has the computer science program in the country and in addition, offers several IT graduate programs including the software in engineering master's degree as distance learning options. The distance learning project is a joint effort put forth by the University's School of Computer Science and the on-campus Software Engineering Institute.

2. Cornell University offers a Masters in Computer Science to qualified undergraduates as a one year program. Students have a great deal of flexibility in shaping their curriculum for this degree. Among the elective options are courses in Applied Systems Engineering and Project Management, both courses that will match up well with the software related core courses.

3. Georgia Tech has a highly rated computer science program as might be expected. Like several universities this school has combined the electrical engineering and computer science disciplines into one academic department. The master of science in electrical and computer engineering can lead in several directions for areas of concentration including electronic design and applications. It's a one year program with both a thesis and a non-thesis option.

4. University of Michigan/Dearborn offers a Master of Science in Software Engineering as collaboration between the Computer and Information Science Department and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Central Michigan University, also part of the state system, offers an online masters in software engineering degree through the Master of Information Resource Management program. The concentration courses include systems analysis and design, software systems engineering and software project management.
