Missouri State University's Graduate Teaching Programs

Master's in Teaching

Students can pursue teacher certification and a Master's Degree simultaneously through the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. In this program, students choose an area of Secondary Education that they wish to focus on, which they will receive their teaching certificate in. A core of education courses in addition to content area coursework in the subject area the student has chosen to concentrate in must be completed in order to graduate from the program. The different topics to be studied in this program include human growth and development, education research, foundations to special education, educational applications of computers for teaching, and more.

Master of Science in Education - Reading

The Missouri State Graduate Reading program equips graduate students with the knowledge and skills to be able to teach reading to students from kindergarten to college level. Upon completion of the program, students will also be able to supervise reading programs. If they wish to do so, students can also qualify as reading clinicians by taking additional coursework. A comprehensive exam and research must be successfully completed before the degree can be granted. Required courses include problems in reading education, literacy education, educational research, and how language relates to reading and intellectual development.

Qualified students can pursue a Ph.D. degree in Art Education through the Department of Learning, Teaching, & Curriculum (LTC) in the University of Missouri College of Education. This degree is closely linked to the University of Missouri Fine Arts Program and prepares students to teach art in K-12 schools. Courses include Professional Education requirements along with Art Content, Art History, and Art Pedagogy.
