Montana State University is among the well-known ten institutions in the country in terms of the number of Goldwater scholars it has produced in addition to having produced several Rhodes scholars as well as Truman scholars. The University boasts a comprehensive teaching program through the Department of Education, offering doctoral and master's degrees in several areas.

Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction

Students pursuing a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction will receive extensive knowledge and necessary skills in the areas teaching, research, and service through an integrated approach. By the end of this program, graduate students will be able to teach in teacher education programs in college and university settings across the nation. The program of study includes core classes in research, Curriculum & Instruction and Internships/Apprenticeships, coursework in area of concentration, and a doctoral thesis. Courses for this program include educational research, general school curriculum, history and philosophy of education, and advanced educational psychology.

Master's in Curriculum and Instruction - Professional Educator Option

Students can also pursue a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. One of the options in this program is the Professional Educator Option. This option includes a choice of three different programs of study. Students can choose the Professional Educator Option for Elementary (K-8) Teachers, for Secondary (6-12) Teachers, or for K-12 Music Teachers. Classes common to all three tracks include contemporary issues in education, assessment and evaluation in education, mentoring new teachers, and applied educational research. Students are also expected to complete coursework in their licensure area and a professional paper/project.
