Nevada Graduate Counseling Schools with Master's and PhD Degree Programs

University of Nevada - Reno Department of Education:

This is considered to be the education department in the state of Nevada and one in the country. This university is the land-grant university in Nevada and has one of the reputations among public universities in the country. The department of education here offers a diverse array of degrees and areas of research and concentration. Master of Arts in Community Counseling:

This is a graduate program for qualified students who are interested in becoming community counselors. Students may choose individual areas of concentration and minors. Students begin the program by learning about the current theories and research methods being used in the field. Students will then go on to explore individual issues and challenges facing today's community counselors. Students participate in a number of clinical research projects and internship opportunities. Students meet with faculty members and advisors to discuss options for independent projects and thesis papers. Students who successfully complete this master's program are qualified to become counselors in a community agency environment. Students may also pursue PhD degrees.

Master of Science in School Counseling:

This master's program is for students who would like to enter the career of school counselor. Students may choose individual areas of concentration. Students begin the program by learning about advanced methods of research and current trends in behavioral theory and practical method. Students participate in discussions and learning groups where they may discuss data and analysis and perform activities such as role play exercises. Students also meet often with faculty advisors who supervise independent projects and papers. Students are tested often. They participate in internships and experiential education. Students who have successfully completed this program are qualified to enter the school system as counselors. They also apply for PhD degree programs.

PhD in Educational Psychology:
This is an advanced graduate degree for students who already have academic and professional experience in educational psychology. Students enter the program having already declared their areas of interest and research. Students continue their learning of cutting-edge research methods and theories. Students perform a number of hours of clinical research and meet with faculty advisors to discuss results and methods of analysis and interpretation. Students study counseling methods, as well as the data associated with education and behavior. Students complete dissertations, which are defended before the academic panel. Students who complete this PhD program become professors and researchers. They may also serve as administrators and advisors in school districts and government organizations.
