University of North Dakota Department of Counseling Psychology and Community Services:

Master of Arts in Counseling:

Master of Arts in Counseling with K-12 School Counseling Concentration:

This is a special graduate degree for qualified students who would like to become school counselors. Students begin with a core counselor education. Students learn about research methods and practical application methods. Students also attend lectures and participate in discussions about key issues facing counselors in schools today. Students will participate in internships that give them the experience they need to be ready for their new careers. Students consult often with faculty advisors who help them to complete their research and master's thesis papers. Students who complete this program are qualified to serve as school counselors and community counselors. They are also qualified to apply for PhD degree programs.

PhD in Counseling Psychology:

This is an advanced degree for graduate students who have master's degrees in counseling and would like to develop a more advanced understanding of contemporary research strategies and applications. Students in this program perform hours of clinical research. They attend professional meeting and seminars. They also work with faculty advisors to develop and complete PhD dissertations. Students defend their dissertations before academic panels. Students who complete this program become university researchers and educators.
