The Graduate School at Virginia Tech is ranked 25th in the United States. Over 2000 students are enrolled in the school's engineering program. To meet the needs of its diverse student population, Virginia Tech offers a variety of degree programs. Here is a sampling of the degrees offered by the University.
Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering
Students who wish to pursue this degree can take the thesis or non thesis track. Students who take the non thesis track will obtain their degree through coursework, projects or reports. Students who choose the thesis track must take courses and create research. All students must take courses in general areas such as aerodynamics, structures and flight mechanics. They must also take courses in physics and mathematics.
Master of Science in Biological Systems Engineering
Students can choose to take the thesis or non thesis track. The thesis track requires independent research to create and defend an original thesis. Students who take the non thesis complete a research and design activity and create a report on their findings.
Master of Science in Chemical Engineering
This degree program has a thesis and non thesis track. Students will take core courses in phenomena, mathematics, thermodynamics and kinetics. In addition to these core courses, students will take elective classes to supplement their research for their thesis or their specialized area of interest.
Master of Science in Computer Engineering
This degree program has a thesis and non thesis track. Students must complete core course in addition to elective courses geared towards their area of specialization. Students can choose from a variety of specializations such as Computer Systems, Networking, Communications and Electromagnetics.
Master of Science in Electrical Engineering
Students who enroll in this degree program will create a study plan with a faculty advisor. A thesis is required
Doctor of Philosophy in Aerospace Engineering
This degree is research oriented. In addition to creating a research project, students will take courses in aerodynamics, structures, flight dynamics, applied physics and applied mathematics.
Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Systems Engineering
Students are required to conduct independent research and create a thesis.
Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering
Students will take core courses in phenomena, mathematics, thermodynamics and kinetics. Students will take elective courses in addition to creating and defending a thesis.
Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Engineering
Students who choose to enroll in this degree program will work with an advisory board to create a plan of study and courses to meet the individual's needs. In addition to taking core and elective courses, students will conduct research to create a thesis.
Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering
This degree program is research oriented. The program is tailored to meet the individual needs of the student.
