West Virginia University College of Human Resources and Education:
This is the only college in the state of West Virginia known that offers a wide array of graduate programs in education and teaching. This college is known for its concentration on the student. Whereas some colleges in the country will concentrate on theory and research, and others will concentrate on application, this college is known for its emphasis on theory, research, and practice. Students at the undergraduate and graduate level are given many opportunities to participate in internships in local institutions. Students also work closely with faculty and are given access to the cutting edge technology and software being used in today's classrooms.
Master of Arts in Reading:
This program is for students who already have a strong background and at least one degree or certification in teaching. The program teaches graduate students to teach reading to students on the K-Adult age groups. Students begin by further advancing their understanding of key concepts in pedagogical and teaching theory. Students also form learning groups, in which they discuss current issues and challenges in today's literacy education world. Students are also introduced to new methods and practices of reading teaching. All students engage in experiential internship education that allows them to get real world practice in a classroom reading situation. Students who complete this program are certified to teaching reaching and develop new methods of literacy education.
Master of Education in Elementary Education:
This degree is for students who would like to develop an advanced understanding of elementary education. Students begin with core education classes. They learn about teaching methods, pedagogical strategies, and current issues in today's schools. Students also learn about new theories of teaching and learning. Students have access to the most cutting-edge research methods and classroom software, technology, and media. All students participate in internships that last for at least one year. Students work closely with faculty to complete independent projects. Students who complete this program become leaders in the teaching profession. Others may even apply for PhD degree programs.
Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction:
This program is for students who have already completed master degrees in education and would like to advance as scholars and researchers in the field. Students must declare areas of individual concentration and expertise. Students must also pick a minor. Students begin the program by studying further developed core issues and theories in education. These students are interested in big picture school system issues. They use the most cutting-edge research methods to study and analyze policy and sociological and anthropological perspectives to education and schools. Students work closely with faculty advisors to complete dissertations. These dissertations are presented to and defended before an academic panel at the end of the program.
